Meet Kelly

When Randy first started work in Haiti, you can imagine that there was a huge language barrier between him and our contractors. Luckily, we were introduced to a contractor named Maxon who understood English and became Randy’s unofficial translator. Maxon introduced his firstborn son, Kelly, to Lakou, and Kelly became one of our first cohort students. He is one of the most humble and dedicated young men in our program, and he quickly showed an interest in the world of construction.

Kelly started as a laborer and gradually grew in his abilities. He had a lot of difficulty with math in the classroom, but he has been doing better with our new training methods and our new curriculum. Kelly also continues to learn about construction, leadership, and personal finance. He loves to cook, and one of his dreams is to have his own restaurant someday.

This month Kelly made the decision to get married. This is not an easy thing for a young person in Haiti, but it shows that Kelly has decided to be responsible and stabilize his life. We are encouraging him to continue learning, and one day, as he gains knowledge and skills, he will have more responsibility on the construction site. We are glad that Lakou is giving the youth in Haiti a sense of dignity and the desire to become more responsible.

We wish each of our participants the best, and we are so thankful to our supporters who help us provide training that will encourage responsible citizens who can work to provide better futures for their family, their community and their country!

We are very serious when we say that we never stop believing Haitians are capable of making a difference! As Randy always says, “The only magic formula is that there is no magic formula.” The family remains the essential cell of life. It is within the family that children find the love and support that is critical to their development and balance. This is also where they learn their duties and rights, which is the best protection against delinquency.

Let’s continue to create opportunities for bright futures like Kelly’s….together.

Thanks for supporting Lakou.
